Basic Info:
The Name Udgir was derived from the saint Udagir Baba.
As of 2001 India census,[1] Udgir had a population of 2,00,908. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Udgir has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 63%. In Udgir, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. Most people in Udgir are Maharastrians. The main source of income is Agriculture, and there is a famous dairy farm. Besides Marathi, Urdu, Kannada and Telugu are widely spoken and understood by majority of the people.
The Udgir city has glorious historical background and is known for a well built fort of pre-Bahamani age and the nearly 800 years of Muslim rule under the Sultans and the Mughals over the region. It is also famous for the historic battle between Marathas led by Sadashivrao Bhau defeated Nizam in 1759 and the treaty of Udgir was signed. Marathas got a convincing victory in the battle of UDGIR under the able leadership of brave warrior Sadashivrao Bhau. Later it prompted Peshwe (Peshwas) of Pune to promote/elevate & designate him as Chief Commander of Maratha Army for the "THIRD BATTLE of PAANIPAT" fought in 1761.
With reference/respect to many famous wars/battels of Paanipat, since then over centuries eventually "Paanipat" has itself become a meaningful term & / proverb with many meanings. viz Watres (the Wothiness/Metals) "Tested/Examined", Merged etc. Further more related to debackles /setbacks wars/ battles / clashes / conflicts / contexts etc. Paani = the water/s got pat = ( also means found in some sense) but more as lost/vanished/evapourated.
Around Panchkroshi of Udgir city & the fort in particular scattered over many kilometers mostly on the hills in many directions there are old observation Points/ Buildings/Establishments [all well built& mostly Table Tops with special whilte clay (shadu=cement)& varieties of mixed stones] for the military /army from protection/safety point of views & also a few Resorts /Rest Houses /Mahals (like small palaces); without exceptions those are disfigured /destroyed. This is something very serious to be looked into & taken care earnestly by the govt / authorities.
Udgir Fort
The fort of Udgir stands in all its glory speaking volumes about the Indian history and Indian culture. The fort is bounded by a 40 feet deep trench as the fort is built at the ground level. In the fort are several palaces Durbar halls and the Samadhi of Udaygir Maharaj which is 60 feet under the normal ground level. Udgir was named after the famous Hindu Saint Udaygiri Rishi. This is a place of great reverence to the people of the region. The fort has some rare inscriptions written in Arabic and Persian which testify to the promotion of knowledge and culture by the Muslim rulers over the centuries.There is a famous Jamia Masjid located at Chaubara is one of the two biggest mosques, the other one is Maqbara mosque which is located in the centre of the city.
Its believed that the Udgir fort has a direct deep underground soorang (tunnel) connection with bhalki & / Bider Forts
Today the town is an important commercial centre. It is a taluka and also the subdivisional Headquarters.The cattle market of Udgir has been famous mainly on account of the Devani breed of Bull which is not merely a graceful herbivore but equally efficient friend of the farmer.
Situated along the Mahrashtra-Karnataka border, Udgir taluka has achieved remarkable development. It has introduced revolutionary study techniques for the intensely competitive 10th and 12th standard examinations. Udgir created academic history with many of its students topping the State merit list. Today the town is an important commercial centre.
